1998
Thu, Jul 2, 1998 It's hot, it's humid. We're fortunate to not be in Florida; the fires there are mind-boggling. Meantime, Year 2000 is coming. A friend sent a link to a Salon Magazine interview with Ed Yourdon, author of Time Bomb 2000. Eerie stuff. It snowballed from there. There are 9 million Year-2000 sites, so I'm not even gonna try. However, here's a short list of some interesting stuff to check out, and a longer look at the problem. Wed, Apr 1, 1998 Congratulations to Paula and Eli! Their daughter, Jordan Ashley Ontiveros, was born March 31, at 11:30 p.m., Denver, Colorado -- a whopping 7 lbs. 15 ozs. and 21.5 inches long! That makes me a great-uncle; I feel kinda old! :-) Wired: Japanese develop diesel fuel from recycled cooking oil. Utne Online: Punks to Monks explores the appeal of the Eastern Orthodox Church to gen-Xers and world-weary punkers. CNN: The first electronic stamps. Point and click: no more waiting in line for postage. Fri, Mar 27, 1998 The Internet as the New Satan. Bishops urged to "cleanse" the Internet. FBI calls King allegations a fabrication. CNN: Toxic wastes in fertilizer. What is that stuff creeping up the food chain? Ex-FBI agent alleges Martin Luther King conspiracy. S. J. Merc: Good-bye, DOS. Mon, Mar 23, 1998 What's with the spammers? After switching ISPs, I'm suddenly getting inundated with spam! This is a hot topic with a lot of people, worse I think when a person has his/her own domain. Here's a good anti-spam resource for those of you plagued with junk e-mail: Fight Spam on the Internet. Other miscellany: I ran on to some of this stuff while I was sick but didn't have the energy to update the page: Wired News: Three-Dimensional Map of the Universe. This sounds very cool and will somehow find its way onto the Internet (if they can figure out how to deal with the seer size of the data -- something like 60 terabytes). Also from Wired: The FBI spams a list of 100,000 companies and organizations.. This is almost funny, especially when the initial polite apologies turn a bit frosty and suspicious. On a more serious note: CNN talks about shared nuclear attack power, i.e., what happens when the Joint Chiefs can't raise the President on the telephone. The government's current "no comment" on the issue suggests that the policy of predelegation may still be in place. Some interesting links to other sites on the same topic. Thu, Mar 5, 1998 News.com: "Computer privacy group kicks off" - The economic boom of the information superhighway isn't going to happen without truly secure transactions and solid encryption. Wired: "Pentagon hacker speaks out" - A Cloverdale, CA, teenager, recently rousted by the FBI, suggests that computer systems aren't as secure as we'd like to think. CNN: "Ice on the Moon" - Will this discovery perhaps revitalize the space program? Business Week: "Privacy and security" - An interesting survey suggests that many Americans are reluctant to buy online for fear of misuse of their credit card numbers. Many others express concern over perceived lack of privacy of electronic communication. Computer Currents: "Copycat URLs" are often used by pornographic sites. Dilution-of-trademark suits are perhaps more appropriate than misguided efforts to censor the Internet. Fri, Feb 27, 1998 If things aren't already weird enough, we have an aspiring teen vampire sentenced to death in Florida. Will California soon join the trend in executing minors? Tue, Feb 24, 1998 Back to East Berlin -- Kenneth Starr returns us to the days of the Stasi. Has everyone forgotten the term "due process"? Sheesh, enough rain already! We have been so very fortunate to escape any serious damage. Our hearts go out to the folks who have lost friends, family, or their homes. Tue, Feb 3, 1998 Senators McCain and Murray are at it again with a new bill to protect children from seeing smut on the Internet. Been there, done that, got the tee-shirt. (See Cyber Porno Hysteria.) We've been up to our ankles in water but fared well compared to many areas. More is on the way. Ack! Apache has released their webserver in a Windows95/NT version. Cool! Back to Wintel -- yes, I have defected (sort of). Sat, Jan 24, 1998 Are we in the midst of a media witch-hunt with the unfolding Clinton scandals? The news gets nastier and more perturbing by the minute. More on this later. Mon, Jan 19, 1998 We're knee-deep in switching the site over into Frontier 5. Fun stuff! Frontier is now cross-platform, so all you Windows guys and gals who are interested in building websites ought to check it out. Congratulations Morgan and Bret! (They are getting married in mid-May.) Wed, Jan 7, 1998 Welcome to 1998! This page has not been updated recently, since we are in the midst of gearing up with the new version 5.0 release of Frontier. We're also coming out of the post-holiday slump. :-) |
