Dysfunctional Communication
Much is made of how we can effortlessly communicate globally in this age of all things "cyber." Nations begin to lose boundaries, cultures begin to merge. It's convenient, nearly instantaneous, and ... it can be a disaster. Some get more caught up in this wave of technology than others. Some are forced into it, in a sense, by having to keep up with the pace because of their employment or for other reasons. Their comfort level with this technology does not necesssarily match that of their peers. Unpredictable results can occur when a "technophile" and a "technophobe" try to communicate via this relatively new medium. I suddenly find that I am rather annoyed with a good friend of nearly twenty years because he will not answer e-mail. Yet this same friend is glad to pick up the phone, call, and chat at length. He is more comfortable doing this than typing on his computer keyboard. So why am I annoyed? The medium is not the message, I have to realize. A computer is, after all, a tool to accomplish something, not an entity unto itself. |
